Data & sources

Every number has an address

Figures are pulled by script from public APIs and stored exactly as received. Nobody retypes a value. Any number on this site can be traced to the file and request that produced it.

1 · Fetch

From the publisher's API

One script per source requests the data and saves the raw response with the URL and time of the request.

2 · Check

Against the licence

Only sources with an open licence verdict are published. The rest are listed with what is needed to use them.

3 · Build

Into the dashboard

A build script reads the stored files and writes the data behind this site. Re-running it reproduces every figure.

Indicators on the dashboard

Each indicator below comes from an open-licence source, with the exact query and the date it was fetched.

Eurostat data are reused under the Eurostat copyright notice (CC BY 4.0). CDC/NCHS data are US government works in the public domain.

What we may use, and what is pending

Three findings shape the index. The only global source of depression and anxiety prevalence (IHME) is non-commercial. WHO's dataset terms bar use that promotes a commercial enterprise, which also covers WHO figures relayed by the World Bank and UN. The Legatum Prosperity Index, the basis of the 2020 version, cannot be reused without written consent.

Verdicts were checked in October 2026 and are reviewed before every release. Licence wording is confirmed by a person before publication.

Coverage

Gaps we are working on

Most inputs are annual and two to three years old. Health interview surveys run every five to seven years. National statistics offices and health ministries are being reviewed one country at a time, starting with the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the United States.

United Kingdom

Eurostat series for the UK end between 2014 and 2019. National sources are rich but split by nation: ONS for England and Wales, NRS for Scotland, NISRA for Northern Ireland, and NHS England monthly service statistics for England only.

Switzerland

Covered by Eurostat for suicide, workforce, beds and life satisfaction, but not by the EU health interview survey. Assisted suicide is reported separately from suicide.

United States

Monthly and quarterly provisional mortality from the CDC. Survey prevalence is annual since the Household Pulse mental health items stopped in September 2024.

Israel, China and Brazil

No open, comparable source is loaded yet. China has no official API or open licence; Brazil's Ministry of Health data carry a no-derivatives licence that needs a legal read.

The full dashboard dataset is one JSON file: indicator series by jurisdiction and year, the US pulse series, and the specification tables. An API, an llms.txt file and an MCP server for AI agents are planned for the first release.
